Mandu Mandu Creek campground is one of the most coveted camp bookings in Western Australia, and once you’ve been, you understand why completely. It sits on the beach inside Cape Range National Park with the Ningaloo Reef directly offshore — not a boat trip away, not a short drive away, directly offshore. You can walk into the water from your campsite and be snorkelling on a coral reef within a minute.
The campground is exposed and honest about it: no shade trees, no water, no showers, composting toilets. The Cape Range rises behind you, the Indian Ocean spreads in front, and at sunset the whole scene turns colours that seem physically implausible. You’re completely self-sufficient here — bring every litre of water you’ll need, all your food, your snorkel gear, and your sunscreen.
The snorkelling off the beach varies with conditions but is reliably excellent — fish life is dense, turtles are common year-round, and reef sharks (predominantly blacktip and whitetip) cruise the shallows in a way that’s initially startling and quickly becomes routine. Whale sharks pass through the offshore waters from March to July; local operators run tours from Exmouth.
Sites are a mix of walk-in and 4WD-access along the sandy coastal track. Soft sand driving applies — deflate tyres appropriately and know what you’re doing, or walk in if you’re uncertain. The walk-in sites are still close enough to the water to be excellent.
Exmouth is 65km north for Coles, fuel, and restaurants. Book through DBCA Parks and Wildlife — the booking window opens three months in advance. These sites vanish within hours of opening. If you miss out, Osprey Bay to the south is the next best option in the park.
