Mungo Brush sits on the western shore of Myall Lake — the largest coastal lake system in NSW — and it hits a sweet spot that’s increasingly hard to find: accessible by 2WD and caravan, genuinely beautiful, and not so famous that getting a site requires a four-month head start.

The campground is spread through paperbark and melaleuca forest that comes right down to the lake edge. Sites are reasonably spread out, the ground is generally flat, and the whole place has a relaxed, family-friendly feel. At dusk, pelicans and black swans cruise the shallows. In the morning, the lake surface is often dead-calm, and the light through the paperbarks is soft and yellow.

The road in from Tea Gardens is unsealed but well-maintained and suitable for caravans taken at a sensible pace. The lake side of the park is much more accessible than the beach-facing tracks — this is where you come if you want the Myall Lakes experience without needing a 4WD.

Bring a canoe or kayak. There’s a good launch spot at the campground and the lake is spectacular to paddle — wide open water, forested shores, and islands to explore. A half-day paddle to the northern section of the lake and back is one of the better ways to spend a morning in the NSW national park system.

Facilities are honest: flushing toilets, cold showers, and non-potable water taps for washing and cooking (filter or boil it). Bring your own drinking water. Tea Gardens is 15 minutes away — IGA, a couple of cafes, a bakery, and a pub.

Fires permitted in rings when conditions allow. Book through NPWS. Midweek in April or May, this campground is about as good as it gets for a quiet lakeside escape that doesn’t require serious expedition planning.
