Osprey Bay is Cape Range National Park’s slightly quieter alternative to Mandu Mandu — further south, further from Exmouth, and a little harder to reach. The reward is a campground that has the same extraordinary reef-front position with marginally fewer people competing for the same experience.
The bay is named for the osprey pairs that nest on the headland and are reliable daily presences — you’ll hear them before you see them, a sharp piercing call that carries across the water. Watching them fish from the headland above camp is the kind of low-key wildlife encounter that becomes the thing you remember most about a trip.
The beach is a long arc of white sand with the Ningaloo Reef sitting just offshore in shallow turquoise water. Snorkelling here is excellent — entry points are easy, the reef edge is accessible without a long swim, and the fish and coral variety is what you’d expect from one of the world’s largest fringing reef systems. Reef sharks, turtles, and large coral bommies are the standard experience. During whale shark season (March–July), the animals pass through these waters; day-trip boats from Exmouth operate into this section of the coast.
Beach fishing from the point is productive — coral trout, spangled emperor, and the usual suspects in good numbers for those who know where to cast.
Facilities are basic: pit toilets, no water, no showers. Bring everything from Exmouth, which is 80km north. The drive south through the park on the coastal sand track requires a capable 4WD and appropriate tyre pressures. Check current track conditions with DBCA.
Book through DBCA Parks — slightly easier to secure than Mandu Mandu but still popular. A second-choice booking here while waiting for a Mandu Mandu cancellation is a good strategy.
