The Ruins campground at Minnie Water is one of those spots that outdoor regulars mention quietly, in the way people mention places they’d prefer to stay undiscovered. It’s not a secret exactly, but it’s off the main highway by 15km of dirt road, there are no showers, and the nearest town is a small village with a general store and a pub. The people who go are the people who don’t mind any of that.
Yuraygir National Park protects one of the longest stretches of undeveloped coastline in NSW, and Minnie Water sits somewhere in the middle of it. The beach here is a wide, exposed surf beach backed by low scrub and dune. At the northern end of the campground, a lagoon opens up — calm, brackish, good for a swim when the surf is firing too hard to go in the ocean. The name “The Ruins” comes from the remains of an old building on site, now mostly reclaimed by scrub.
The road in from Wooli is unsealed but manageable in a standard 2WD sedan if driven carefully — some corrugations and sandy patches, nothing technical. Larger caravans may struggle in wet weather; check conditions before heading out.
Fishing is excellent — the lagoon, the beach, and the rocky sections of headland all produce results. Surfing is inconsistent but can be very good on a south swell. Bring enough food and water; the general store in Wooli is small and hours can be unpredictable.
Facilities are basic: pit toilets and a tank water tap (not potable — filter or boil). Bring your own drinking water. No showers. Fires in rings when conditions permit.
Book through NPWS. Grafton, 75km away, has full services if you need to stock up properly before making the run.
